Au79

Located in the heart of Abbotsford, Au79 is the hottest brunch venue to hit Melbourne.

The latest venture for the CCC Group and the brainchild of Maggie Li and Julia Ho (who between them own and operate some of Melbourne’s most popular cafes including Addict Food & Coffee, Sir Charles, Liar Liar and Prospect Espresso), it is no wonder that this is a slick operation which already operates like a well-oiled machine.

We loved the stunning fit out which boasts a light, bright ambience with plenty of natural light. Together with the use of earthy tones and lush planting in the atrium, the space is wonderfully inviting.

Most (if not everything) is made in house. The coffee roaster roasts each batch, the baker kneads the dough, the pastry chef carefully constructs each work of art. Together, they make a synchronised symphony, all under the one roof of a converted
mechanics workshop.

The name of the café is cleverly derived from the periodic symbol AU79, meaning gold. Embracing this as a benchmark, the kitchen strongly stands by their food ethos, ‘from oven to table’.

Led by Executive Chef, Stephen Hogan, along with the powerhouse trio of Ryan Lynch (ex-Addict Food & Coffee, Bistro Guillaume) and Edward Noble (ex-Sir Charles, Chiara), the menu is unsurprisingly excellent.

Our top pick was the 24 Hour Braised Lamb Croquettes. Think perfectly seasoned lamb meat that had been pulled from the bone and pressed together to form a “brick” shape and then crumbed. The lamb meat was incredibly tender and full of flavour. The accompaniments of pickled kohlrabi, roasted root vegetables, charred onions, carrot and orange puree and crudité brought the dish to another level when eaten together. Simply beautiful.

If you have a sweet tooth, do not go past the Belgian Waffle Balls.  Stunning golden puffs of ethereal in texture waffle balls were served luxurious passionfruit cream, banana compote, fresh pineapple, banana crumb and aromatic pandan ice cream.

For the coffee-enthusiasts, there is much to love. Head coffee roaster Minekazu Hirayama roasts AU79’s own 24K blend along with various single origin coffees sourced from the best coffee farms across the globe.

AU79 certainly lives up to its name – This eatery is as good as gold!
