Meet Mama Rumaan, a fierce Arabic mama who has taken up residence on Central Pier, Docklands. Causing disruption in the tranquil, waterfront suburb, Mama Rumaan has rebelled against the norm with the creation of her Middle-Eastern style canteen. Bold, flavourful and authentic is the way they play it here and boy does it work.
To start we enjoyed a selection of small plates which were each absolutely delicious. The lamb kibbeh was moist, the sausages were full of flavour, the falafels were aromatic and fluffy. We also particularly enjoyed the cabbage rolls – think delicate cabbage leaves encasing an enticing mixture of tomato, veggies, rice and pomegranate molasses.
For the main affair the Middle East Feast was one decadent plate. This baby is filled with lamb kofta, lamb tekka, chicken tekka, flat bread and traditional condiments including brown rice, jajik (thick yoghurt) and tabouli.
A visit to Mama Rumaan would of course be incomplete without her famous dish of Qouzi. This is one luxurious dish which is an absolute must-have. Melt in your mouth morsels of slow cooked lamb shoulder intertwined amongst traditional herbs and spices, cracked wheat, chickpeas and juicy pomegranate arils.
Dessert time is equally exciting at Mama Rumaan. Whatever you do, make sure you get the Dessert Tasting Platter. You get to taste pretty much the whole dessert menu and it doesn’t disappoint.
With a welcoming ambience and delicious food that is designed to be shared as you would amongst family, Mama Rumaan’s is definitely worth a visit. You will come hungry but in true mama style you will leave completely satisfied.
