Imbuing a sophisticated, yet seductive vibe that Italians bring so well, Tipico adds Italian flair to Windsor’s bar and restaurant playground. A bold terrazzo bar, with dark olive tones, concrete and Italian leather, Tipico delights with classic Italian flavours made with Australian ingredients in a modern setting.
Labelled by co-owners Andrea da Como (DOC, The Lucas Group, McConnell Group) and Marco Scalisi (Ti Amo, Swillhouse Group, Tokyo Tina) as an ‘untypical, typical Italian restaurant’, the venue is one that embraces art and design, but maintains a relaxed neighbourhood restaurant vibe.
With da Como and Scalisi providing authentic Italian hospitality front of house, the kitchen is in safe hands under the guidance of head chef Domenico De Marco. De Marco draws on his classical European training and Australian experience working under Luke Mangan and Neil Perry with a menu that features memorable Italian dishes made with locally sourced produce.
You can’t really go wrong with the menu. To start there is the luscious eggplant parmigiana made with layers of grilled eggplant, arrabbiata sugo and heady parmigiana which is like a loving hug from nonna.
As expected of any good Italian restaurant, these guys make amazing pasta. We tried the squid ink tagliolini on the night of our visit and were not disappointed – ribbons of al dente pasta were adorned with sweet morsels of spanner crab, cherry tomato and chilli. Simply beautiful. For something heartier, the cotoletta is to die for – beautifully crispy crumbed layer encases tender veal.
Dessert time at Tipico is particularly memorable. The cassata is some of the best we have had and is made with lashings of fresh house-made ricotta, candied fruit and pistachio. The pizza dolce is similarly gratifying – Think fluffy pizza base layered with decadent squacquerone custard and topped with a generous spoon of pear gelato. It’s a thing of beauty.
On the drinks front, patrons will be pleased with the wine list that has been handpicked by da Como and Scalisi which shines the spotlight on Italian and Victorian wines, alongside a concise cocktail list featuring Italian classics such as Campari and Soda and Aperol Spritz.
Providing Melburnians with classic Italian hospitality, flavours and design, Tipico is fast becoming a Windsor dining hotspot.
