Project281

Project281 is Connell McGrath and Sargon Michael’s (previous owners of The Glass Den Café) next big step in Melbourne’s café industry.

Project281 is a café that caters to all diners alike, from your every morning coffee visitor to Melbourne’s foodie obsessed community.

The menu is vegan friendly and heavily influenced by Japanese, Korean and South East Asian cuisine, with some serious show-stoppers.

International award winning architectural firm Splinter Society have flooded the warehouse with natural lighting, garden beds, stones and timbers keeping a natural feel, with optimal lighting for those great shots. There is even a fifty-square metre indoor herb garden on the mezzanine level providing fresh produce to the kitchen.

We loved tasting our way through the menu.

The Poke bowl was absolutely delicious and featured exceedingly fresh marinated salmon sashimi, sesame rice, greens, avocado bean smash, tomatoes, wasabi pea crumb and kimchi – all finished with Aojiso dressing.

Project281’s take on the smashed avo is also worth a mention. We loved the creamy mix of smashed avocado and beans, poached egg encasing gooey yolk, goats feta, tomato, pomegranate, greens, seeds, puffed grains sitting atop crusty charcoal sourdough.

Whatever you do, do not leave without trying the caramelised pear hotcake turnover. Think roasted pear, luscious ricotta ice cream, citrus ginger syrup and crisp pumpkin-seed brittle. Just yum!
