Wildergreen Is Redefining the Murray River Escape

There’s a new reason travellers are flocking to Echuca Moama, and it goes far beyond the Murray River paddlesteamers and charming country-town nostalgia the region is known for. Enter Wildergreen — a sprawling lifestyle precinct that is transforming the way visitors experience one of Australia’s most beloved regional destinations.

Set amongst beautifully landscaped gardens and open-air spaces in Moama, Wildergreen seamlessly blends exceptional dining, family-friendly experiences and relaxed luxury into one destination. Whether you’re planning a gourmet getaway, a family road trip or a laid-back weekend escape with friends, the precinct has quickly become the social and culinary heartbeat of the region.

At the centre of Wildergreen are three distinct venues — Junction, Embr and The Bistro — each offering a different dining experience while sharing the same commitment to regional produce, warm hospitality and memorable moments.

For elevated dining, Junction continues to cement its reputation as one of regional Australia’s standout restaurants. Sophisticated yet approachable, the venue champions seasonal local produce through refined contemporary Australian cooking that feels both polished and deeply comforting.

During our visit, dishes such as Hiramasa kingfish collar with mountain pepper, dill and miso beurre blanc showcased the kitchen’s flair for balancing delicate seafood with bold flavour, while the bouillabaisse featuring wild barramundi, king prawns and clams delivered rich, soulful comfort. Even vegetable-focused dishes, like the buttermilk cauliflower with vadouvan, macadamia cream and curry leaf, arrived packed with texture and creativity.

Just steps away, Embr brings a completely different energy to the precinct. Led by Sardinian-born chef Daniel Girau, the wood-fired Italian restaurant is warm, theatrical and instantly inviting, with the crackle of flames and aroma of blistered pizza dough greeting guests from the moment they walk through the doors.

The menu celebrates handmade pasta, Neapolitan-style pizzas and dishes kissed by fire, blending Italian tradition with quality local Australian produce. Long lunches effortlessly drift into dinner here, fuelled by spritzes, shared plates and the glow of the restaurant’s roaring wood-fired oven.

Pizzas emerge beautifully charred with chewy crusts, handmade pastas are rich and comforting, and larger dishes designed for sharing create the kind of convivial dining experience that encourages guests to settle in for the evening. The atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between refined dining and relaxed family-style hospitality.

For something more casual, The Bistro offers approachable, crowd-pleasing dining that is ideal for families, groups and relaxed holiday meals - Bright, spacious and welcoming.

The menu spans everything from steaks and seafood to burgers, salads and comforting classics, making it an easy option whether you’re after a quick lunch, an easy family dinner or a relaxed meal after a day exploring the Murray region.

But Wildergreen’s appeal extends far beyond the food. One of the precinct’s standout inclusions is Treehouse, an innovative supervised eco-learning and sensory play space designed to make dining out easier — and more enjoyable — for families.

Thoughtfully designed using natural textures and interactive play experiences, Treehouse encourages creativity, curiosity and discovery in a calm and engaging environment. Children can immerse themselves in hands-on activities and imaginative play while parents unwind nearby over dinner and drinks, a concept that feels refreshingly family-focused without compromising on style or sophistication.

For parents travelling with children, it’s a genuine game changer. Rather than rushing through meals or relying on screens at the table, families can enjoy a more relaxed experience knowing little ones are entertained in a safe and enriching environment. Combined with the precinct’s outdoor playgrounds, gardens and open green spaces, Wildergreen has managed to create a destination that caters equally well to adults and children.

Expansive lawns and beautifully landscaped outdoor areas encourage visitors to linger long after their meal ends. Live music, cocktails in the sunshine and a welcoming community atmosphere all add to the feeling that Wildergreen is far more than simply a dining precinct — it’s a destination designed around connection, relaxation and experience.

Its location also makes it the perfect base for exploring the wider Echuca Moama region, from Murray River cruises and wineries to cycling trails and riverside walks. Yet it would be easy to spend an entire weekend within Wildergreen itself, moving leisurely between long lunches, relaxed dinners and lazy afternoons outdoors.

Less than three hours from Melbourne, Wildergreen feels like the modern Murray River escape travellers have been waiting for — sophisticated without losing its regional soul, family-friendly without sacrificing style, and home to some of the most exciting dining experiences in the country’s river region.
