Delphi with Crispy Local

A visit to Athens would be incomplete without a day trip to Delphi to explore the ancient ruins and learn about the ancient priestess who purportedly conveyed messages from the god Apollo.

Thanks to CrispyLocal, we were taken on a private day trip to Delphi to explore the sights and sounds. Our amazing tour guide, John, picked us up from our hotel in Athens and we were soon on our way. The thing that makes CrispyLocal special is it truly feels like you have a friend in Athens (a really really good friend that is happy to drive you for hours!) who is showing you around. There are no formalities, just fun and interesting conversation as you head on your way. If you want to take a nap in the car, that’s cool. If you want to know about life in Athens and chat about politics, yes, that’s cool too. There is that immediate feeling of comfort and casualness that makes for a relaxed and enjoyable trip.

Delphi historical site and Archaeological Museum

Approximately 2 and a half hours later we were in Delphi where we headed to the UNESCO-listed mountainside archaeological site, one of Greece’s most renowned and best kept sites. John dropped us off right in front of the entrance so we could start exploring the ruins first hand. We started our visit at the rotund Tholos of Athena Pronaia, walking up to the Castallian Fountain and then we headed up into the main site along the Sacred Way where we were greeted by the most amazing sight, the Temple of Apollo.

The all-day ticket for the site includes a visit to the Archaeological Museum, which hosts a collection of intact bronze statues including the Charioteer of Delphi, architectural elements, like the frieze of the Siphnian Treasury and ex votos dedicated to the sanctuary of Pythian Apollo, like the Sphinx of Naxos.

Lunch at Taverna To Patriko Mas

We had worked up an appetite after all that exploring so John recommended we try a beautiful place to enjoy lunch, Taverna To Patriko Mas. This restaurant is well worth the visit for its views alone. The food served is traditional and has a home-cooked feel to it.

A picturesque walk in Arachova

After lunch, John drove us to Arachova for a picturesque stroll. A mountainous village nestled at the foot of Mt. Parnassós in Viotia, Southern Greece, Arachova is most famous as a cosmopolitan winter destination for passionate ski lovers. We thoroughly enjoyed the traditional character of the village and its narrow, atmospheric cobblestone streets.

Our journey with John and CrispyLocal concluded as John dropped us back at our hotel.
