Hotel Vera
/In the heart of Ballarat, Hotel Vera offers a refreshing take on boutique luxury, combining the character of a restored 19th-century mansion with contemporary design, Australian art and thoughtful hospitality. With just seven individually styled suites and the acclaimed Babae restaurant on site, this intimate retreat is an ideal base for a food-focused getaway in Victoria's Goldfields.
Staying in the Lonarch suite
Our home for the stay was the Lonarch suite, a beautifully considered space where exposed brickwork, warm oak floors and contemporary artwork create a distinctive aesthetic. Melbourne artist Carol Batchelor's Layers of Time 01 adds an artistic touch, complementing the building's heritage character.
A sumptuous king bed dressed in Bed Threads linen, double rain-head showers and a marble shower plinth elevate the experience, while practical touches such as a Samsung Frame television, wireless charging and in-room tea and coffee facilities ensure modern comforts are well covered.
Dining at Babae
No stay at Hotel Vera would be complete without dining at Babae, its intimate, chef-hatted restaurant celebrating seasonal produce and regional Victorian growers. With a strong emphasis on provenance and thoughtful cooking, the menu showcases the best of the Goldfields in a sophisticated yet welcoming setting.
Our maître d' was happy to oblige when we asked for recommendations, helping make the experience feel personal. We opted for a bottle of wine to accompany our meal, settling in for a leisurely evening. Having such a destination-worthy restaurant within the hotel is a real luxury, allowing guests to enjoy dinner before retreating to their suite just moments away.
Breakfast
Breakfast continues the hotel's commitment to local producers, with a thoughtfully curated continental offering featuring Vegas & Rose granola, seasonal fruit, yoghurt and pastries from Turret Bakehouse. Coffee from St Ali and artisan teas from Bendigo Tea Associates round out the selection.
It's a relaxed, quality-focused start to the day that celebrates regional makers without unnecessary fuss.
The little touches
From Tekla bathrobes and Sheridan towels to a Dyson Supersonic hair dryer and carefully selected tea and coffee, Hotel Vera's smaller details make the stay feel considered. Its collection of Australian artworks and emphasis on local suppliers further reinforce its sense of place.
Hotel Vera is a standout choice for travellers seeking character-filled accommodation paired with exceptional dining. With its beautifully appointed suites, thoughtful hospitality and Babae on the doorstep, it makes a compelling case for turning a Ballarat visit into a destination getaway.
