Northcote STN

The owners of Workshop Brothers have recently expanded their café portfolio to include STN. Standing for station, the name is inspired by one of the owners, Nolan Taing's dream to one day return to Australia to open a café with his brother Brian while travelling on the London Underground each day to go to his corporate job.

Five years on, this dream has become a reality with the brothers teaming up with Joe La to form the Workshop Brothers. Their latest venture, STN looks to become another Melbourne favourite, succeeding in crafting a convivial atmosphere in which to enjoy a weekend brunch.

We loved tasting our way through the menu.

The lamb shoulder dish was stunning. The lamb shoulder was deliciously tender. As expected, it was exceedingly flavoursome and simply melted in our mouths having benefited from being slow cooked for hours. The rich house-made hummus tied the lamb, pulses and grains together while the date jus dressing added a lovely sweetness to the dish.

The roasted barramundi served with king brown mushroom, israeli couscous, currants, cauliflower, tarragon sauce vierge and a gooey centred poached egg was similarly delicious. The quality of the barramundi was exemplary. The skin of the fish was perfectly seared to be very crisp while the flesh was delicate and moist. It was a dish that allowed the natural subtle sweetness of the fish to be enjoyed.

For the sweet tooths, we suggest you do not leave without trying the red velvet pancakes. This is one breakfast favourite that amalgamates the best things in life - Think fluffy pancakes served with crisp coconut meringue, freeze dried fruits, raspberry, white chocolate soil and luxurious mascarpone. Just. Yum.

As expected from any good Melbourne café, the coffees at STN are excellent. Served with an intricate rosetta in the milk foam, both our cappuccino and latte were well made, with the slight sweetness of the frothed milk cutting through the residual brightness from the foundation espresso.
