Oikeio

Authentic, rustic, homestyle cooking is the name of the game here and boy do Oikeio do it well. An iconic restaurant that has been featured in the Michelin Guide since 2009, this is one stop you have to make when you are in Athens.

Oikeio started as a one woman show in 1996, serving only 1 dish to customers. Today, the restaurant operates over 2 floors and books out on the weekends. The secret is the alluring authentic Grecian food made using only Greek ingredients from Greek recipes that have been passed down for generations.

The restaurant is wonderfully decorated. There is a lot to look at but it all comes together beautifully and creates a cosy, home-like atmosphere.

We loved tasting our way through the menu. The dolmades were stunning and perfectly prepared. The hearty dish of moussaka was similarly delicious, boasting flavour and simply melted in our mouths. The dish of veal cooked with thyme, lemon and baked potatoes was yet another highlight. The meat was incredibly tender and the potatoes were other worldly. Simply comfort food at its best, it was like a hug from yia-yia.

With outstanding food that celebrates Greek cuisine, charming ambience and service as well as prices that won’t hurt the hip pocket, Oikeio is a must-visit.
