Pane e Pizzico

Meaning bread with a pinch, Pane e Pizzico is a wonderfully traditional artisan Italian bakery in Essendon with plenty of heart and soul. Century old techniques are used to create a variety of Italian breads, pastries, biscuits and tarts.

There is plenty to enjoy in the café or to take home for a delicious feast.

As it was breakfast time, we started our tasting with a variety of their sweet treats. We fell in love with Pane e Pizzico's Nutella Bomboloni. These golden puffs were stunning. Ethereal in texture, the doughnuts were cinnamon-sugar coated and jam-packed with decadent nutella. We loved that the dough had been baked and not fried and had a less greasy texture. Simply beautiful.

We also loved the traditional vanilla cream pastry roll and jam tartlets which featured melt in your mouth, buttery crumbly pastry.

For something savoury, do not go past their beautiful foccacias. The Foccacia Bianca was our top pick. Think crusty rosemary focaccia filled with decadent provolone cheese, prosciutto, rocket and laced with extra virgin olive oil.

Whatever you do, do not leave without taking home a loaf of the Pane Della Salute. Made with kamut, spelt and wholemeal, it is simply stunning. Boasting a crunchy brown crust and a soft interior, this is one bread that holds it's own and is perfect to enjoy simply with good extra virgin olive oil.
