Taverna Axiotissa

Ask any local where you should eat in Naxos and they are most likely to say Taverna Axiotissa. A celebrated restaurant on the island, Axiotissa is known for its deliciously creative take on culinary classics and its use of exceedingly fresh local produce. Due to the support from owners Sofia and Giannis Vassilas, local farmers are heroed and are able to grow crops and cheeses that might have otherwise ceased their existence on the island.

Giannis is a talented chef with a background in philosophy, and has also recently published the book Around The Cooking Pot – which is simply a stunning read and also includes thoughts, recipes and stories from Axiotissa.

Under his guidance, the kitchen is a well-oiled machine. Don’t come here expecting a regular tavern menu. Giannis has breathed new life into every dish. Quality ingredients from Naxos are used at every step of the way and only extra virgin olive oil is used by the kitchen.

We loved everything we sampled at the taverna. Of particular note was the dish of aubergines. It was a well-conceived dish that took full advantage of the eggplant’s most notable characteristic – its supple flesh. The creamy eggplant flesh melted in the mouth in a manner similar to unctuous pork fat. Paired with Naxian local cheese, this gem of a dish was one that commands respect.

Another highlight was the paper baked lamb dish. The lamb was so tender it simply melted in our mouths courtesy of being wrapped in parchment with garlic, onion, cheese, rosemary and thyme before being baked lovingly in the oven. The accompanying potatoes were delicious and mopped up the beautiful juices from the dish.

The restaurant also offers a little dessert on the house so you leave on a sweet note but if you want more, there is also an excellent selection to choose from.

The restaurant also boasts a great selection of Greek wines to enjoy with the delicious plates.
