Votomos Taverna at Idi Hotel

Located in beautiful Zaros, Votomos Taverna boasts traditional Cretan cuisine. The restaurant has its own fishery so you can be assured that freshly caught fish is on the menu!

Votomos Taverna is also dedicated to showcasing Crete’s produce in the best light. So their meat comes from farmers in the region and their vegetables are organic and from their very own garden. Even their bread is made in house from freshly grown flour made from their watermill.

We loved tasting our way through the menu. To start, the fava dip was sensational and luxuriously slathered with extra virgin olive oil. The octopus was another highlight. Cooked to perfection, it was wonderfully tender and bursting with flavour. A visit to Votomos Taverna would of course be incomplete without trying their famous trout. Our dish of fried trout with rice and fried potatoes was beautiful. The natural sweetness of the exceedingly fresh fish shone through.

Our visit concluded on a sweet note with galaktoboureko, a traditional Greek dessert made with layers of golden brown crispy phyllo pastry, sprinkled with melted butter and filled with the most decadent custard and bathed in scented syrup. Just yum!
