Day 2

9am – Morning stroll through Echuca’s historic main street

We started the morning with a stroll through Echuca’s charming historic streets, browsing boutiques, local stores and artisan retailers housed inside beautiful heritage buildings.

First stop was coffee at The Black Pudding Cafe, where we enjoyed an excellent coffee before continuing our wander through town.

We also visited Rich Glen Olive Estate for gourmet pantry items and homewares, while Echuca Chocolate Company was impossible to resist for sweet treats and gifts.

Art lovers should also make time for MarraMarra Gallery Marketplace, The Foundry Arts Space and Customs House Gallery, all showcasing works from talented local and regional artists while adding to the creative charm of the town.

11.30am – Murray River cruise aboard the PS Canberra

One of the highlights of our trip was stepping aboard the beautifully preserved PS Canberra, a 113-year-old paddle steamer powered by a 1923 wood-fired steam engine.

The one-hour cruise along the Murray River offered a wonderful glimpse into Echuca’s rich riverboat history while showcasing the tranquil beauty of the surrounding landscapes. As we drifted along the river, the knowledgeable skipper and crew shared fascinating commentary about the region and the historic vessel itself.

Families travelling with children will especially appreciate the interactive touches onboard, including the opportunity for kids to have their photo taken at the helm with the skipper and receive a personalised skipper certificate.

Refreshments, coffee, drinks and snacks are also available from the onboard kiosk and bar, making for a very enjoyable river experience.

12.30pm – Lunch at Morrisons Winery & Restaurant

Midway through the river cruise, we stopped at Morrisons Winery & Restaurant for lunch as part of the combined Wharf to Winery experience before hopping back aboard the PS Canberra for the return journey to Echuca.

Located just outside Moama, the winery boasts a picturesque vineyard setting alongside a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. Morrisons is known for its estate-grown wines and focus on fresh regional produce, making it a fantastic spot for a long lunch.

The food was delicious, with beautifully presented dishes that paired perfectly with the winery’s selection of wines. Combined with sweeping vineyard views and the slower pace of the Murray region, it was easily one of the standout experiences of our weekend away. Find out more about the Wharf to Winery experience here.

3pm – Winery tasting and horse-drawn carriage rides

After lunch, we visited St Anne's Winery for a relaxed afternoon wine tasting. The welcoming cellar door offered the perfect opportunity to sample a range of regional wines while soaking up the laid-back atmosphere.

We then slowed the pace even further with a ride aboard Billabong Carriages. The horse-drawn carriage ride loops around several blocks of town and offers a charming way to take in Echuca’s historic streets.

At just $10 per person, we found it to be a very affordable family-friendly activity, made even better by the friendly staff and drivers.

6pm – Dinner at Embr

For dinner, we visited Embr, one of the region’s standout dining destinations and a must-visit for lovers of Italian cuisine.

Located within the Wildergreen precinct at Moama Bowling Club, the wood-fired Italian restaurant is led by Sardinian-born chef Daniel Girau and celebrates handmade pasta, Neapolitan-style pizza and dishes cooked over fire using quality local produce.

The warm atmosphere, impressive wine selection and delicious food made for a memorable evening and another highlight of our Echuca Moama getaway. Find out more here.

Day 3

9am – Breakfast at The Sweet Meadow

We began our final day with breakfast at The Sweet Meadow, a cosy café known for its welcoming atmosphere and wholesome menu focused on fresh ingredients and comforting flavours.

The menu offered plenty of tempting options, but standout dishes included the Meadow Greens with sautéed green vegetables on garlic sourdough, the housemade gnocchi tossed with garlic butter, sundried tomatoes, spinach, basil pesto and almond feta, and the banana and buckwheat pancakes topped with berry compote and white chocolate.

Combined with friendly service and a relaxed country feel, it was the perfect way to ease into our final day in Echuca Moama. Find out more here.

11am – Explore Moama Farmers Market

Next, we explored the Moama Farmers Market, a wonderful showcase of the region’s local produce, artisan products and country hospitality.

For visitors wanting to experience the flavours and creativity of Echuca Moama, the market is well worth adding to the itinerary.

12pm – Lunch at Junction

Lunch at Junction was a true highlight of the trip. The stylish venue combines modern Australian dining with a strong focus on regional produce and beautifully executed dishes.

During our visit, standout dishes included the buttermilk cauliflower with vadouvan, macadamia cream, puffed black rice and curry leaf, the beautifully cooked Hiramasa kingfish collar with mountain pepper, dill and miso beurre blanc, and a hearty bouillabaisse filled with wild barramundi, king prawns and clams.

The elegant yet relaxed atmosphere, paired with polished service and excellent food, made Junction a memorable dining experience and the perfect final lunch of our getaway. Find out more here.

3pm – Explore the Port of Echuca

Before heading home, we spent the afternoon exploring the historic Port of Echuca, one of Australia’s most iconic river heritage precincts.

Walking along the riverfront, it was easy to imagine the bustling paddle steamer era that once made Echuca one of the country’s busiest inland ports. The beautifully preserved wharf, historic buildings and paddle steamers provide a fascinating insight into the town’s rich history and enduring connection to the Murray River.
