Hellenic Hotel in Williamstown has recently undergone a transformation into a modern Argentinian bar, grill and wine cellar, Hotel Argentina.

Helmed by Argentinian-born and raised Head Chef Dan Szwarc, Hotel Argentina is inspired by the tastes, the smells, the celebrations and traditions of his childhood.

We loved dining at the main restaurant, Areco, which delights with a light and fresh menu, designed to complement its port location, with a focus on the grill, seafood, meat and salads.

Our evening commenced with a wonderful list of picadas (sharing plates). Highlights included grilled octopus escabeche with hearts of palm, baby “corn dog” and grilled veal tongue, tonnato sauce and white anchovies. Everything was perfectly cooked and tasted vibrant.

The vegetales + ensaladas (vegetables + salads) section of the menu was similarly commendable. You can certainly be friends with salad at Hotel Argentina. Think charred sweet potato, crème fraiche and goat’s cheese, and the eggplant and onion rescoldo with gremolata and cocina (kitchen). Just yum!

For mains the parrilla, plancha + espiedo (grill, flat grill + rotisserie) boasts a stunning selection of meat and seafood - all hot off the fire. We loved devouring the asado (beef short-ribs) and chorizo (house sausage).

Whatever you do, make sure you leave room for dessert. The dessert of summer meringue, fresh berries and rose hip sorbet will conclude your visit on a blissfully sweet note. You can thank us later.

On the drinks front, expect a great selection of South American and Australian wines and beer to enjoy with your Argentinian feast.

The venue also offers a more casual dining option at Bodega, Hotel Argentina’s wine cellar where you can enjoy an almost endless spread, or just a taste, of picada or have some wine to take away.

And upstairs, Friday – Sunday, 12noon till close, you will find Dan’s Empanada Bar, serving up flakey golden empanadas inspired by Dan’s family’s recipes and traditions.
