Lola

Tucked inside Ballarat’s historic Provincial Hotel, Lola brings a touch of European elegance to the regional dining scene. With a menu that draws inspiration from across Europe and celebrates seasonal produce from local Victorian growers and makers, it’s the kind of restaurant that turns a meal into an occasion.

The dining room strikes a lovely balance between sophistication and warmth, with considered styling and a relaxed atmosphere that invites diners to settle in and savour the experience. The menu is designed for diners who appreciate familiar European flavours given a contemporary twist.

We began with the lamb ribs, paired with smoked eggplant cream, preserved lemon, herb jus and pistachio dukkah. Rich and savoury, with the freshness of lemon cutting through the lamb’s depth, it was a delicious introduction to the kitchen’s confident approach to flavour.

The beetroot gnocchi was another highlight, combining brown butter carrot fondue with charred greens, Meredith goat cheese and toasted pecans. The earthy sweetness of beetroot, creamy fondue and tangy goat cheese created a lovely balance of flavours and textures, while the pecans added welcome crunch. It’s a thoughtful vegetarian option that feels every bit as considered as the meat dishes.

For mains, Lola continues to draw on the comforting traditions of European cooking. The duck offered an opportunity to explore the restaurant’s classic European sensibilities, while the slow-braised lamb moussaka delivered a more rustic, Mediterranean-inspired experience. Layered with Mediterranean vegetables and accompanied by romesco, basil pesto, Meredith goat cheese, soft polenta and lamb jus, the moussaka is a hearty, deeply flavoured dish that showcases the appeal of slow-cooked lamb.

Dessert is where Lola’s flair for presentation really comes into play. The chocolate and kalamansi tart brings together rich chocolate cream, tangy kalamansi curd and gel, hazelnut crèmeux, raspberry sorbet and delicate green tea micro sponge. The citrus provides a refreshing counterpoint to the chocolate, making each mouthful feel layered rather than overly sweet. The tiramisu, meanwhile, offers a familiar Italian favourite with a luxurious twist, featuring mascarpone cream and a trio of chocolate flavours.

For those exploring Ballarat’s dining scene, Lola is well worth adding to the itinerary. Elegant without feeling overly formal, it offers an inviting blend of European-inspired cooking, regional produce and polished hospitality. Whether you’re stopping in for a leisurely lunch or settling in for dinner, it’s a restaurant that encourages you to slow down, order something special and leave room for dessert.
