Nieuw Amsterdam

Nieuw Amsterdam is undergoing somewhat of a transformation with Martin Bleich bringing a New York brasserie style cuisine to the streets of Melbourne. Set in an appropriately decked out space in an 1880s iron foundry building, Nieuw Amsterdam serves some great dishes and drinks late into the night.

We started off with the cheese croquettes, a favourite of mine with melted provolone cheese oozing out of the crunchy croquette. Transiting slightly, we then had the Salmon pastrami. A lovely red colour, the salmon is bourbon-cured served with watercress mayonnaise - yum!

Moving onto mains, we absolutely love the slow cooked Beef short rib which just fell off the bone. Very cliche to say but honestly it was so amazing! Covered in a smoky BBQ red wine sauce and accompanied by cheesy creamed corn, it’s OK to accept a button flying off your shirt as you enjoy another bite.

For dessert we had the Tarte Tatin and Hot chocolate mouse. Both were quite sweet dishes. We’d suggest having a try of the bistro classic tarte tatin which is an upside-down apple pie - some very deep, dark caramel flavours in this one!

A good spot to have some cocktails, we’d recommend coming here if you’re looking for a space to accommodate a large group or for a (more civilised) work drinks.
