If you’ve been anywhere near Melbourne’s food scene — or your Instagram feed — lately, chances are you’ve caught a glimpse of the striking RED Afternoon Tea experience at Oxi Tea Room. With its bold visuals, playful touches, and intricate flavours, this seasonal experience is yet another reminder of why Oxi continues to captivate dessert lovers and aesthetes alike.
More than just an afternoon tea, Oxi crafts immersive, themed journeys that change with the seasons. Each concept is brought to life through thoughtfully composed sweet and savoury creations, a bespoke tea menu, and whimsical extras that keep regulars — myself included — coming back for more.
The current RED theme is a flawless showcase of Oxi’s creative flair. From the moment the three-tiered stand arrives, it’s clear this is no ordinary high tea. The savouries are just as impressive as the sweets — think flavourful, refined bites that balance the sugar rush to come. And then, of course, the desserts: beautifully plated, layered with nuance, and utterly delicious.
A highlight this time was Oxi’s geometric à la carte cake collection, each shaped dessert as bold in flavour as it is in presentation.
Circle: strawberry, vanilla and pesto — an unexpected yet harmonious trio.
Square: genmaicha, matcha and green apple — earthy, tart and subtly sweet.
Triangle: yuzu, tropical fruit and dark chocolate — a citrusy, rich showstopper.
For art lovers and adventurers, the Yayoi Kusama-inspired Flower Obsession dessert adds a delightfully interactive element. Guests are invited to place polka dots across the plate before diving into the vibrant, floral creation — a sweet nod to the iconic Japanese artist’s signature style.
And just when you think it couldn’t get any more whimsical, a mini riddle leads to a surprise take-home gift, reinforcing that at Oxi, it’s the extra details that make the difference.
Whether you're a first-time visitor or a returning devotee, Oxi Tea Room continues to redefine what afternoon tea can be — elegant, immersive, and irresistibly Instagrammable. The RED Afternoon Tea is a must-try while it lasts.
