Saigon Soul is an iconic Vietnamese eatery located in Ascot Vale. The venue exudes informality, with the large space accented by rustic finishes. In line with its social setting, the menu items are primarily designed for sharing, with dishes divided into user friendly sections. The menu is abundant with options and features flavoursome dishes inspired by traditional Vietnamese and Chinese recipes.
To start we loved the traditional Bo la lot featuring grilled minced beef in betel leaves, slathered in beautiful nuoc cham sauce. The chicken skewers were similarly delicious – plump and generous morsels of chicken and pineapple were laced in a decadent home-made satay sauce. Just yum!
For mains, the dish called “Week to week” was scrumptious. We loved the perfectly steamed barramundi fillet which was served with a rich caramel sauce of ginger, garlic, onion, chinese broccoli topped with cilantro and pepper.
The Lucky Lucky Duck was similarly delicious. Addictive morsels of marinated duck were fried and served with a sticky orange honey sauce.
If you have a sweet tooth, do not leave without trying the banana fritter. The banana had an ethereally light and crispy batter and was soft and sweet inside. Served with a creamy vanilla ice cream, this was a pleasant end to our meal.
With a $3 corkage BYO policy, a bunch of all-time favourites on the menu, coupled with speedy and friendly service Saigon Soul is a winner.
