Som Chai

The sibling of the fine dining institution Sarong, Som Chai is a Kerobokan favourite established by Chef Will Meyrick's Sarong Group to deliver high quality Thai cuisine and top notch cocktails.

The dining room engenders modern flair and is marshalled by friendly and affable staff, eager to please. In line with its social setting, the menu items are designed primarily for sharing. The venue runs seamless thanks to an all-star team, ensuring that all the zest, vibrancy and vigour of Thai cuisine comes through on every plate.

We started with the Ancient duck “tom kha bpet”- a spicy chicken curry in coconut milk which was beautifully flavoured with young galangal and seasoned with roasted chili jam, fish sauce, lime juice and fresh bird's eye chilies. The dish was a multitude of intense flavours and was highlighted on by the slices of duck which had been masterfully cooked to showcase a delicate texture.

The grilled Tokusen wagyu beef rump was equally delicious. Rare slices of beef swimming in an umami-laden sea of lemongrass, roasted rice, mint and nahm jihm jaew.

For mains we fell in love with the Central Thailand Gaeng choo chee of prawns. Featuring exceedingly fresh, plump and beautifully cooked prawns in a decadent and creamy curry cooked in a flavour-laden mix of kaffir lime, Thai basil and coconut cream.

The crispy salted pork with yellow bean, garlic, chilli and gai lan continued the trend of amazing dishes. The pork belly was succulently prepared to retain a porky juiciness, achieving a healthy layer of melt-in-the-mouth fat in the process.

We finished our meal with a dessert platter – in this case, one that included an assortment of Thai inspired desserts. Each of the desserts was just a joy to indulge in. An exemplary display of Som Chai’s versatility, the dessert platter is highly recommended.

In a market where casual yet refined dining is in vogue, Som Chai assimilates perfectly. Fortunately, unlike some other restaurants which implement a casual approach to the detriment of the food that they produce, Som Chai adheres to a very high standard – we simply cannot wait to return.
