Supernormal Canteen

Supernormal draws on the years Chef Andrew McConnell spent working and living in shanghai and Hong Kong - An interpretation of his favourite Asian eating experiences incorporating food in family homes, street food and restaurants.

The smaller, more intimate, sister restaurant, Supernormal Canteen is everything you’ve come to love about Supernormal but with a younger, cooler vibe.

The menu comprises a variety of old Supernormal favourites with an additional focus on delicious morsels straight off the hibachi grill.

We loved spending the evening in Canteen's private dining 'cube' where we were taken on a delicious culinary journey.

To start we loved the Typhoon shelter school prawns – perfectly crisp and seasoned to the yin-yang, it’s the perfect bar snack with your favourite tipple. Also perfect with your drink? The amazing selection of yakitori. Canteen boasts some of the best yakitori that Melbourne has to offer. We absolutely loved their range of grilled skewers. Without exception, each skewer had been sufficiently seasoned and was wonderfully flavoursome and displayed a delectable outer charring courtesy of having benefited from the perfect time on the grill.

For something light and refreshing, the Raw Kingfish is a stunner. Slices of beautifully fresh Kingfish are adorned in yuzu buttermilk, cucumber and fermented chilli. A melange of creaminess, tartness, heat and textures.

Supernormal’s most popular dish, the New England lobster roll makes an appearance at Canteen and was, as expected, a massive hit. Sandwiched between buttery brioche buns are substantial portions of tender lobster meat, complete with indulgent sauces. These rolls wantonly disregard the current trend towards healthy eating and, as a result, are abundantly flavoursome – the slightly sweet flavour of the brioche is enhanced by the butter and the intense lobster flesh is accentuated by liberal helpings of sauce.

The desserts at Canteen are similarly well devised. Think peanut butter gelato laced with salted caramel and chocolate or for a modern take on the traditional, try the Taiyaki with strawberries and cream.

Supernormal Canteen offers a winning casual dining experience with a delicious and approachable Asian-focused menu and great drinks in a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere.
