Junction Moama

Set within the heart of Moama, Junction is one of the region’s standout dining destinations, bringing together sophisticated contemporary cooking, local produce and the rich history of the Murray River. While the venue has become a favourite for refined evening dining, we settled in for a leisurely lunch that showcased exactly why Junction has built such a strong reputation in the Echuca Moama food scene.

The venue itself strikes a balance between rustic charm and modern elegance. Inspired by the historic Junction Inn established along the banks of the Murray River in the 1840s, the restaurant pays homage to the area’s pioneering past while delivering a polished and distinctly contemporary dining experience. Warm interiors, attentive service and a strong connection to regional produce make it feel both welcoming and elevated.

The menu leans heavily into seasonal ingredients sourced from the Murray region, with dishes designed for sharing and lingering over. To start, the buttermilk cauliflower proved an unexpected highlight. Served with fragrant vadouvan, silky macadamia cream, puffed black rice and curry leaf, the dish layered texture and spice beautifully while allowing the vegetable itself to remain the hero.

Seafood features prominently throughout the menu and is executed with finesse. The Hiramasa Kingfish collar arrived perfectly cooked, paired with mountain pepper, dill and a rich miso beurre blanc that brought depth and brightness in equal measure. Equally impressive was the bouillabaisse, a generous seafood feast filled with wild barramundi, king prawns, clams, pipis and mussels, all immersed in a deeply flavoured bisque with rouille and crisp croutons adding classic French touches.

For a more indulgent offering, the Japanese Kagoshima A5 Wagyu striploin MB12+ delivered everything expected from premium wagyu — rich marbling, incredible tenderness and full-bodied flavour. The accompanying hen of the woods mushrooms and bold Szechuan jus balanced the richness perfectly without overpowering the quality of the beef itself.

Sides here are far from an afterthought. The thrice cooked chips with kombu salt and yuzu aioli were impossible to stop picking at, while the charcoal roasted Dutch carrots with goats curd, wattle seed honey and pistachio brought sweetness, smokiness and crunch together in one beautifully composed plate.

Dessert continued the refined approach. The quince mousse with mascarpone, oat crumble and marigold was delicate yet comforting, offering a light finish after a generously satisfying meal.

The drinks program is equally considered, with an extensive wine list showcasing both Victorian varietals and international producers alongside craft beers, premium spirits and fresh, herb-driven cocktails. It complements the restaurant’s broader philosophy of celebrating regional flavours while embracing a sophisticated modern dining style.

More than just a restaurant, Junction feels intrinsically tied to the story of Echuca Moama itself. The venue honours the region’s history, from the Murray River trade routes to the legacy of the Yorta Yorta people, while showcasing the incredible produce that continues to define this part of Australia today.

Whether experienced over a long lunch or an elegant dinner, Junction offers the kind of memorable regional dining experience that lingers long after the final course.
