Oakridge marries hand-crafted wines and beautiful food seamlessly and elegantly.
Co-head chefs Matt Stone and Jo Barrett have created a stunning menu of contemporary vineyard food with real soul that speaks of the region. Passionate advocates of sustainability and ethical food sourcing, Stone and Barrett have had a profound impact on the restaurant at Oakridge Wines. Introducing what they call “Yarra Valley cuisine”; a zero waste menu philosophy, with all ingredients either grown in the Oakridge kitchen garden, foraged from around the region or sourced from local farms and producers.
To start, the fennel tarte tatin served with witlof, soured cream and mandarin was absolutely stunning. The melt in your mouth pastry combined beautifully with the caramelised witlof in the most magical way.
The Kangaroo was similarly delicious. Exquisitely prepared - each morsel was tender and boasted impressive depth. Together with textural native greens ‘kim chi’ and sandlewood nuts this was certainly a memorable dish.
For mains the Dry aged duck, rhubarb, rosella and walnut granola was beautiful. The generous slices of duck were beautifully cooked, allowing the rich flavour of the duck to shine through. The luxurious rhubarb reduction provided the crowning element to this dish.
Desserts continued the theme of deliciousness and showcased Stone and Barrett's versatility.
The modern rendition of the humble rice pudding was nostalgic but also boasted wonderfully complex flavours. The chocolate served with whey caramel, Jerusalem artichoke and lemon was thoroughly modern and again, lovely.
Stone and Barrett’s unique teamwork and interplay of complementary skills create fireworks in the Oakridge kitchen. Combining elegant, flavoursome, seasonal dishes with warm, knowledgeable service and wonderful wines produced just metres away, Oakridge provides a superb dining experience. Highly recommended.
