Located in the heart of South Yarra, Rock Sugar guarantees patrons good times with a flavour-laden Modern Thai menu and a stunning selection of cocktails.
The venue is inspired by the hustle and bustle of Bangkok with neon lighting and splashes of greenery echoing the playful energy of Thailand’s famous Full Moon Party and the tropical palm trees of Phi Phi Island.
In line with its social setting, the food is designed to share and most of the menu also just happens to be gluten free, with a great variety vegetarian and vegan options.
To start the spiced Thai tuna tartare was a refreshing amalgamation of fresh tuna cubes, avocado, kaffir lime and chilli salt sat atop rice crackers. The chicken and prawn dumplings were similarly delicious. We loved the silky dumpling pastry which encase juicy fillings.
For main do not go past the massaman curry. A creamy curry of melt in your mouth beef shin (courtesy of being cooked for 18 hours), peanuts, potato, snake bean and pickled shallots. It’s a thing of beauty.
For seafood lovers the whole baby snapper certainly impresses. The fish was meticulously flash fried and tasted wonderful. We loved how the fish was dramatically presented upright on a plate!
Dessert time was an absolute highlight at Rock Sugar. The Mango Tango was a modern take on a traditional Thai hawker snack – Think wobbly coconut panna cotta served with peanut and almond cookie crumble.
For something richer the “Spice up your life” will do just that - Bounty ice-cream, donut bun, chocolate ice magic, dried coconut flakes. Just. Yum.
