Freddie Wimpoles

Freddie Wimpoles is a craft-beer destination of choice on Melbourne’s south side with 13 rotating taps and a warm hunting-lodge meets neon-light American diner feel.

Following a takeover from the iconic George Hotel, the name has been changed in honour of the original owner, Frederick Wimpole.

The kitchen is in safe hands under the guidance of Wayne Sebberry (formerly The Local Taphouse and Woodfrog Bakery). An avid craft beer lover, Sebbery's experience in craft beer pubs all over the world work perfectly in creating a delicious menu which focuses on sub sandwiches, hot dogs and pickled snacks - faultless beer drinking food. All meats, stocks and sauces are made in-house and bread is delivered daily from Bakery Lievito. Each ‘sub’ on the menu is perfectly matched with a tap beer on rotation.

We loved eating our way through the flavour-laden, dude-food menu which is wonderfully unpretentious and celebrates old-school flavours. The Traditional French Dip sub is a show stopper and features tender thinly sliced roast beef, horseradish and the most luxuriously intense beef juice for dipping (or drinking in our case, it's seriously that good). Matched with the 2 Brothers Growler, it is comfort food at its best.

Originally from New Zealand, General Manager and Head Bartender Scott McKay has lived in Melbourne for the last eight years, managing more than eight bars in that time. The result of this experience is a well-oiled front of house operation where you feel immediately welcomed.
